Spring is the Season for Literacy

Spring, 2010 is the season for reading and libraries. There are plenty of opportunities for educators and parents to learn how to put books and reading in the forefront of our schools and homes.
First, is Read Across America on March 2. This day coincides with Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Libraries and classrooms all across the nation typically invite parents, administrators, and community members to come and read to students. There is usually a party atmosphere revolving around books. If your school does not have a celebration for Read Across America and Dr. Seuss, I strongly encourage you to have one this year. As parents, we should celebrate and discuss this day at home. We celebrate other events and milestones all the time; why not celebrate reading in the home?
Secondly, a California-Read-a-Thon is being held on April 16 and 17th. This event not only encourages kids to read for fun but also to reflect and share what they have read with other students throughout the state. The school librarian or teacher can create a blog (for FREE). Visit the website for more information about how to hold this event at your school. Remember participation is FREE.
Lastly, Central Valley Computers Using Educators (CVCUE) are holding a conference in Fresno on April 24. A library strand has been added to this year’s conference. This is a great opportunity for professional development, networking, and sharing for all school library staff. Registration is only $35 and that covers the full day of sessions, continental breakfast, and catered lunch. Do not miss it!!
It doesn’t matter if you and your school participate in all three events or just one, just as long as you are involved.
